New Passport Renewal Rules
With immediate effect the passport office no longer add on extended validity to British Passports. In the past if you have up to 9 months validity on your passport it has always been added on to the validity of your new passport, meaning that your new passport could be valid for a maximum of 10 years and 9 months. As far as we are aware there was no warning and it was only noticed when people receiving new passports had not had their remaining months from their old passports adding to their new ones.
The new policy came into force from 10th September and validity is no longer carried forward. Apparently the change has been made as part of the preparations for the UK to leave the European Union.
Please be mindful of your passport expiry date as some countries require you to have up to six months' validity left on your passport when visiting. UK passports are usually valid for 10 years, but if you're travelling to a country which requires you to enter with validity remaining on your passport, you may have no choice but to renew early.
